What is a position size calculator?
A position size calculator tells you exactly how many lots, units, or shares to trade based on your account balance, the percentage you are willing to risk, and your stop loss distance. It removes guesswork from trade sizing and enforces consistent risk management on every trade — whether you trade forex, stocks, crypto, or futures.
How do I calculate lot size in forex?
Lot size = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop Loss in pips × Pip Value per lot). For example, with a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100), a 20-pip stop loss, and a pip value of $10 per standard lot: Lot size = $100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.5 standard lots. The position size calculator above does this instantly as you type.
What is pip value and why does it matter?
Pip value is the monetary value of a one-pip price movement per lot size. For EUR/USD at one standard lot (100,000 units), one pip equals approximately $10. For a mini lot (10,000 units), one pip equals $1. Pip value differs by currency pair and account currency — using the wrong pip value leads to incorrect position sizing and unintended risk exposure.
How much should I risk per trade?
Professional traders typically risk 1–2% of their account per trade. At 1% risk you can absorb 50 consecutive losing trades before losing half your account, giving your strategy enough trades to prove its edge. Risking more than 2% per trade dramatically increases the probability of deep drawdowns that are difficult to recover from psychologically and mathematically.
