Why Use the Lot Size Calculator?
Choosing the wrong lot size is the single most common mistake new forex traders make. Too large, and normal market fluctuations cause devastating losses. Too small, and your profits are insignificant. This lot size calculator eliminates that guesswork — input your account balance, your risk tolerance, and your stop loss, and get the mathematically correct lot size for any trade on any currency pair. It works for standard accounts, cent accounts, and prop firm accounts of any size.
Formula Used
Lots = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop Loss Pips × Pip Value per Lot)Worked Example
Example: $5,000 account, 1% risk ($50), 25-pip stop on EUR/USD (pip value = $10/standard lot). Lot size = $50 ÷ (25 × $10) = 0.20 lots = 2 mini lots. At 0.20 lots, a 25-pip adverse move costs exactly $50 — your pre-defined maximum loss.
How to Use the Lot Size Calculator — Step by Step
- 1
Enter your account balance
Type your current forex trading account balance in USD. Works for standard accounts, cent accounts, and prop firm accounts of any size.
- 2
Set your risk percentage
Enter the percentage of your account you are willing to risk on this trade. The standard recommendation is 1% for beginners and 2% maximum for experienced traders.
- 3
Enter stop loss in pips
Input the number of pips from your entry to your stop loss. For EUR/USD, a typical stop loss is 10–50 pips depending on your trading strategy and timeframe.
- 4
Enter the pip value
Enter the pip value per standard lot for your pair. EUR/USD = $10/pip, USD/JPY ≈ $9.50/pip, GBP/USD = $10/pip. See the reference table below the calculator for all major pairs.

Read your lot size
Results show your ideal lot size in standard, mini, and micro lots. Use the figure that best matches your account size and your broker's minimum lot size.
What Your Lot Size Calculator Results Mean
Standard Lots
Your position size in standard lots (1.0 = 100,000 units). Most retail traders trade in partial standard lots. If this shows 0.20, you trade 2 mini lots.
Mini Lots
Your position size in mini lots (0.1 standard lot = 10,000 units). Multiply standard lots by 10 to get mini lots. Easier to read for small account sizes.
Micro Lots
Your position size in micro lots (0.01 standard lot = 1,000 units). The minimum lot size at most forex brokers. Ideal for accounts under $1,000.
Dollar Risk
Confirms your exact dollar loss if price hits your stop loss. Should match your intended risk amount (e.g. 1% of your account balance).
Lot Size Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q.How much is 0.01 lot size in dollars?
0.01 lot size (1 micro lot) on EUR/USD = $0.10 per pip. If your stop loss is 20 pips, maximum loss = 20 × $0.10 = $2.00. A 0.01 lot is the smallest position size at most forex brokers and is ideal for accounts under $500. Other common sizes: 0.05 lot = $0.50/pip, 0.1 lot = $1.00/pip, 1.0 lot = $10.00/pip.
Q.What is the best lot size for a $1,000 account?
With a $1,000 account risking 1% ($10) per trade on EUR/USD with a 20-pip stop loss: Lot size = $10 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.05 lots. For a 50-pip stop: 0.02 lots. As a rule: a $1,000 account should trade 0.01–0.05 lots maximum. Anything larger turns every normal fluctuation into a significant account risk.
Q.What is a cent account lot size calculator?
A cent account lot size calculator is used for forex cent accounts where the balance is displayed in cents instead of dollars. 1 cent lot = 1/100th of a standard lot. If your cent account shows $10,000 cents ($100 real), risk 1% = $100 cents. The formula is the same, but values are 100× smaller. Use this lot size calculator with your cent account balance and the results will be in cent lots.
Q.What is the EUR/USD lot size calculator?
For EUR/USD, 1 standard lot = 100,000 EUR = approximately $10 per pip. Enter your account balance, risk %, and stop loss pips — the calculator gives your lot size. Example: $5,000 account, 1% risk ($50), 25-pip stop = $50 ÷ (25 × $10) = 0.20 lots = 2 mini lots.
Q.How to calculate NAS100 lot size?
For NAS100 (US Tech 100): 1 standard lot = 100 units, and 1 pip ≈ $1. Enter your account balance, risk %, and stop loss pips in this calculator using $1 as the pip value per standard lot for NAS100. Example: $10,000 account, 1% risk ($100), 50-pip stop = $100 ÷ (50 × $1) = 2.0 lots.
Q.What is a standard lot in forex?
A standard lot = 100,000 units of the base currency. For EUR/USD, 1 standard lot = 100,000 EUR. Each pip = $10 for USD-quoted pairs. A mini lot (0.1) = 10,000 units, $1 per pip. A micro lot (0.01) = 1,000 units, $0.10 per pip. Nano lot (0.001) = 100 units, $0.01 per pip.
Q.What lot size should a beginner use?
Beginners should start with micro lots (0.01) regardless of account size. At 0.01 lots, each pip is worth only $0.10 — losses are small enough to learn without blowing the account, while still experiencing real market conditions with real money.
Q.What lot size should I use for a $100 account?
With a $100 account risking 1% ($1) per trade with a 10-pip stop loss on EUR/USD: Lot size = $1 ÷ (10 × $10) = 0.01 lots (1 micro lot). This is the minimum lot size at most brokers. For a cent account showing $10,000 cents, the same calculation applies but in cent units.
